I came across a handy WordPress plugin, WPtouch, that provides a friendlier page for iPhone and iPod Touch users. Instead of seeing a full version of the site, which requires zooming to and panning to read the latest news, mobile Apple users will be presented with the following layout:

Now you can stay on top of the news from wherever you are!
Also note that I keep a running list of site updates and monthly statistics reports on my Samuel J. Levy blog.
Engadget, “iPhone OS 3.0 is coming, preview on March 17th”
We just got the announcement, iPhone OS 3.0 is coming. Set your clocks, mark your calendars. It’s going down March 17th. Apparently, we’ll get a sneak peak at the new OS, as well as a look at a brand new version of the SDK. Exciting stuff indeed, and we’ll be there live at 10am PST (1pm EST) with the liveblog. Apple’s calling this an “advance preview of what we’re building,” so we’re not expecting anything ready to go as of the 17th, but hopefully this will allow developers to start building toward future functionality (hey, how about some push notifications?), and presumably users won’t have too many months to wait after that for the real deal.
Thanks Mike
CNNMoney, “Apple To Sell iPhones At Wal-Mart This Month”

The stores had been holding meetings with employees to tell them the details of the release, the newspaper reported.
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (WMT) is expected to become the second major U.S. retailer to sell Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) iPhone.
While sources confirm a deal is in the works, it couldn’t be determined Monday exactly when the Bentonville, Ark.-based company will begin selling Apple’s smartphone. Various media reports this weekend have suggested Wal-Mart will begin selling the iPhone by the end of the month.

AIRLINE BIZ, “D/FW Airport has Best Buy in a machine”
We did a story months ago about Zoom Systems and its vending machines at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and elsewhere.
Swipe your credit card, and you can get an iPod, headphones, whatever you might want for you to take on a trip or a bribe to take home for your kid after the trip.
Now, Zoom has teamed up with Best Buy to have Best Buy-supplied merchandise in a couple of its machines, inside the security checkpoints at Terminal B’s Gate 29 and Terminal E’s Gate 32.
The Unofficial Apple Weblog, “iPhone 3G announced”

In a keynote speech today, Steve Jobs announced the next version of the iPhone, complete with 3G networking, better battery life, a slimmer profile, and global positioning system support.
The phone features a black plastic back, solid metal buttons, the same 3.5-inch LCD display, and a headphone jack mounted flush with the enclosure (which should make third-party headphone vendors happy).
With GPS, the iPhone can be tracked across a Google map as a pulsating blue dot. The iPhone can still derive location data from cell phone towers and WiFi networks.
In terms of battery life, the iPhone 3G offers five hours of 3G talk time, 5 – 6 hours of browsing time, seven hours of video time, or 300 hours of standby time.
The new iPhone will be available in 70 countries over the next several months via a variety of carriers, including Canada, Mexico, Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands, and many others.
The iPhone 3G will start $199 for an 8GB model. The 16GB model will sell for $299, and is available in a black or white backing. It will be available in all countries starting July 11.
Engadget, “South Korean police aiming to equip all new handsets with GPS?”

SEOUL, March 27 (Xinhua) — South Korean police are pushing a controversial plan to have all new mobile phones equipped with a chip that can locate the user through satellite-based positioning technology, the Chosun Ilbo reported on Thursday.
According to Song Kang-ho, chief of the investigation bureau of the National Police Agency, the government had already submitted a related bill to the National Assembly.
The new proposal is submitted in a bid to combat the increasing incidence of kidnapping and other crimes against women and children, the police said.
The measure will risk infringing on the privacy of mobile users and raise the prices of cell phones, the Chosun Ilbo said.
In addition, the system does not work well indoors, where satellite signals are blocked.
Some 20 percent of mobile phones in the country are currently equipped with a GPS device.

Rep. Barney Frank, the chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, has come up with a proposal to spend any TARP profits before they can be returned to the taxpayers. Last Friday, Frank introduced the "TARP for Main Street Act of 2009," a bill that would take profits from the program and immediately redirect them toward housing proposals favored by Frank and some fellow Democrats.
LTC said they discovered that 22 gigabytes of information was intentionally removed from that e-mail server on the day they started work on the project. They also found that Nagin's e-mails on the new server only started in February of this year. The other 58 e-mail boxes go back much further.
