Times Online, “Apple threatens to shut down iTunes over royalty hike”

Apple could shut down iTunes, the world’s biggest online music store, if a ruling expected tomorrow forces the company to pay more to music makers for each downloaded track.
The Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) in Washington DC will decide whether to grant the request of American music publishers to increase royalty rates on songs bought from online music stores such as iTunes.

Gizmodo, “Steve Jobs Responds to Accusations of Dying”
In case you missed my personal favorite moment of the Apple Let’s Rock Event, here’s how Steve Jobs responded to early leaks of his own death. [Gizmodo]
AppleInsider, “New software would let iPhones access iTunes libraries from anywhere”
A new version of Apple’s iPhone Software could provide iPhone and iPod touch users with access to their home computer’s entire iTunes media library while on the go without having to first download those media items through a traditional sync, a new company filing has revealed.
The Cupertino-based electronics maker notes that downloading media items from a computer to a media player is often a time consuming process, and one that is limited by the player’s storage capacity. Therefore, users who are out and about sometimes find themselves without access to some of their content, which sits inaccessible on their home Mac or PC.

The New York Times, “Apple’s Culture of Secrecy”

Because the conversation was off the record, I cannot disclose what Mr. Jobs told me. Suffice it to say that I didn’t hear anything that contradicted the reporting that John Markoff and I did this week. While his health problems amounted to a good deal more than “a common bug,” they weren’t life-threatening and he doesn’t have a recurrence of cancer.
“No one wants to die,” said Apple’s chief executive, Steven P. Jobs. “And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it.”
It was a little over three years ago that Mr. Jobs spoke those existential words, in a commencement address at Stanford. His thoughts about death came during a portion of his speech in which he publicly discussed — for the one and only time, so far as I can tell — his brush with pancreatic cancer.

MarketWatch, “Jobs’ health questioned again”
That was evident this week when the company unveiled its new faster, cheaper iPhone, which Apple hopes will quickly boost its market share against more established rivals such as Research in Motion, maker of the popular BlackBerry. At its Worldwide Developers Conference on Monday, the company announced a new 3G version of the iPhone in a push to target mainstream consumers.
But a strong undercurrent at the event focused on the emaciated appearance of co-founder and CEO Steve Jobs. While Jobs, 53, looked especially gaunt in his trademark black turtleneck and faded jeans, other Apple executives spent more time on the stage during his keynote address — a notable move for an executive who typically spends much of his speech rallying the Mac faithful and introducing many products himself.

The Unofficial Apple Weblog, “iPhone 3G announced”

In a keynote speech today, Steve Jobs announced the next version of the iPhone, complete with 3G networking, better battery life, a slimmer profile, and global positioning system support.
The phone features a black plastic back, solid metal buttons, the same 3.5-inch LCD display, and a headphone jack mounted flush with the enclosure (which should make third-party headphone vendors happy).
With GPS, the iPhone can be tracked across a Google map as a pulsating blue dot. The iPhone can still derive location data from cell phone towers and WiFi networks.
In terms of battery life, the iPhone 3G offers five hours of 3G talk time, 5 - 6 hours of browsing time, seven hours of video time, or 300 hours of standby time.
The new iPhone will be available in 70 countries over the next several months via a variety of carriers, including Canada, Mexico, Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands, and many others.
The iPhone 3G will start $199 for an 8GB model. The 16GB model will sell for $299, and is available in a black or white backing. It will be available in all countries starting July 11.
osmoothie member and contributor, Nick, is in San Francisco for an event and has taken some pictures of the WWDC 2008 preparations. He even claims to have seen the man, Steve Jobs himself, from only 30 yards away (he tried to take pictures but they “came out too blurry”). Below is a photostream that includes pictures of the Moscone Center with Apple decor. Check back with us for more pictures as he adds them.
