GTA IV patched

Joystiq,Grand Theft Auto 4 patch: multiplayer and freezing fixes promised

Nearly two months after dragging reviewers out of their parent’s cars and beating perfect 10s out of them, Rockstar has released a patch for Grand Theft Auto 4 targeting both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 platforms. This patch notably addresses the oft-heard early complaints of “multiplayer connectivity issues” and “freezes during certain modes.” There’s a full list of 11 total fixes so, if you’ve been having trouble getting things done in Liberty City, Rockstar wants to offer you an apology and recommends taking this patch out for a test drive.

GTA IV sells 926,000 copies in UK alone and grosses over $500 million worldwide

Xbox 360 Fanboy,UK GTAIV first week sales: 926,000 copies

Hey, remember those ridiculously high Grand Theft Auto IV sales estimates Chart-Track provided for the UK? It looks like they weren’t ridiculously high enough, as the final numbers have now been released. Sales for the first week of GTAIV availability in the UK reached a whopping 926,000 copies (approximately) with 631,000 being sold on the first day, handily topping the original day one estimate of 609,000. Of the 926,000 copies sold during the first week, 514,000 were for Xbox 360 with the remaining 413,000 going to the Playstation 3.

The game also managed to drive console sales, raising Xbox 360 sales by 125 percent and PS3 sales by 127 percent from the previous week. Perhaps most impressive of all, in its first week of sales GTAIV has already surpassed all but the top three UK titles of 2007 (FIFA 08, Brain Training, and Call of Duty 4). Just to clarify, that’s one week sales versus total sales for 2007. One last statistic: GTAIV is now the record holder for one week sales for a multiplatform game in the UK.

Yow.

GTA IV could be most expensive game ever made

Joystiq,GTA IV could be most expensive game ever made

As we wait to hear about the bagiggles of cash Grand Theft Auto IV is making out in the land of retail, we wondered how much the production actually cost. Speaking with The Times, GTA IV producer Leslie Benzies “hazards a guess” that the game cost $100 million to make, with about 1,000 people working on it.

If true, GTA IV would be the most expensive game ever made according to the Guiness World Records Gamer’s Edition, which has Shenmue on the Dreamcast as the most expensive, at a cost of $70 million to develop (we don’t know if that takes inflation into account). Whatever the cost of GTA IV, we’re sure Rockstar will make (or have already made) it back.

GTA IV hands-on

Kotaku,GTA4 Hands-On: The World is Yours

…To shoot while driving you have to smash out your window. Once, while driving around a guy who was smoking pot, I smashed out the window and within seconds billowing clouds of smoke were pouring through the busted glass.

There’s almost no HUD—instead your entire communication with the game and its many options is through your cell phone. You use it to get missions, find people, even do things like play (and buy) music or take pictures in game.

One of the more memorable moments for me was almost an accidental aside. Standing near the docks one in-game evening, I noticed little white lights lifting and drifting down. Nice touch, I thought, they’ve included distant airplanes. As we moved toward the lights, talking about some mission or maybe the mechanics of play, I looked up and saw that those lights were now fully formed airplanes. I could actually make them out in detail.

“Oh wow, those are actually airplanes?” I said, a little surprised.

My demo team seemed just as surprised.

There is an entire airport of them, they tell me, taxiing, landing, taking off. And it’s all part of the game…

Thanks, Nick
